Swedish sensitivity sells! Loney, Dear a.k.a. Emil Svanängen saw this album released in the USA on SubPop in February and now it's the turn of EMI offshoot Regal Records for the United Kingdom. His slightly hissing falsetto voice and the over all gentle attitude of this recording make this a good reply from EMI to the success of José Gonzalez. Loney, Dear writes some nice songs and 'Loney Noir' is orchestrated with a sense of distinction and imagination.
Loney, Dear's lightweight folk pop have touches of productional class, its fragile sound creating a solid set of songs. It's not all matured and refined though lyric wise, but its sensitive guitar play makes 'Loney Noir' a worthwile listen.
Loney, Dear warmly embrace its listener and provides a big promise for future recordings. You can't take it away from those Swedes; they know how to write good songs and perform these with conviction. Emil would be magic with English lyrics written by an Englishman. There is nothing clumsy about the lyrics though, it's just that the grand music did not get equally great lyrics.
