To be free like a gypsy is the statement that is made on Kultur (pronounce: Kooltoor) Shock's debut 'Fucc The I.N.S.', and aptly describes what makes this album both an adventure and an inspiration. Ranging from up beat polka punk to dubby Balkan mystery, Kultur Shock add the spice to what is found in every good dish. A lot is sung in a language I don't understand but I am assuming that Kultur Shock are, as when they are singing in English, telling similar stories of the stupidity of ethnic distinction and the right to walk this earth. In 'Radio Gitana' hard rock melts with chants of the Roma, the gypsies who are still being prosecuted for their wish to be nomads.
So that's the content. Now let's put up a huge party and play this album loud. No drinks required. This is bubbling and bursting with energy, determination, wit, irony and variety, and blends together superbly punky polka, dubby ska and traditional Balkan music. There is blues, musical mayhem and uproar on excellent tracks like 'Mastika' or the master blaster of 'Gigolo Amerikana', which has powerfully breezing horns. As if there's no end to diversity,'How To Fucc Songs & Irritate' has a Brazilian rhythm and incorporates Right Said Fred's "I'm too sexy for my shirt" line. File next to Ozomatli and the Dead Kennedys !
