Dub is the foundation upon which some of my favourite music has been built. From current drum'n'bass tracks by the likes of Digital and Total Science to "pop" bands like Hood or Tortoise to the electro experiments of Pole you'll find dub basslines bubbling along under the music. Dub can show up in diverse places because dub is fundamental.
This compilation by the WordSound label brings the "Crooklyn Dub" sound to your stereo. Going back to 1993 and onward to the future, the sounds here are deep and somewhat dark - maybe even sinister. The bassline is always where it starts and Bill Laswell provides the bottom end on several of the tracks, riding on those basslines you can find anything: hip-hop, classic dub sounds, electro, vocal samples, guitar, horns, synths,.... in the Crooklyn world, these other elements tend to be fairly minimal, surely not the focus. If you don't have a subwoofer you
might not "feel" this music and with dub, the feel is essential. So listen to the track "Crooklyn Dub Syndicate" and if you don't feel it, you need a new stereo.
