Smashing and twisting soul rock music sets the tone on this compilation from the Sudanese musician Sharhabil Ahmed. It was recorded during the 1970s, a freewheeling era when cafes and clubs in cities like Baghdad, Addis, Cairo and Khartoum showcased how these particular metropoles of the world were oozing and buzzing with liberating vibes. While it is called jazz, this album does not cover the genre we now know as jazz.
Little by little, step by step, that freeform heritage is being documented. The Berlin Habibi Funk Label brushed up recordings by one of its true pioneers of East-African soul music, Sharhabil Ahmed, whose career started back in 1957. Singer, guitar and oud player, Sharhabil Ahmed equally excels in playing local skiffle, rock 'n roll and early soul music. And having performed as recently as two years ago, it seems as if he can't be stopped.
Just seven tracks can be found on this album. Each one is yet blessed and bathing in baffling beauty. Very much 'The Very Best Of Sharhabil Ahmed', its blast off wedding songs are embroidered in scorching party mayhem. Truly a vintage album this.
