A founding member of Faust and Slapp Happy, Gunther Wüsthoff served in the navy and graduated at the Max Planck Institute in Maths and Physics. One might argue that he is something of a genius in his own right. His ambitions perhaps divided by music, technology, science and physical challenges only now came to fruition on an album capturing excerpts of recordings made in his Hamburg studios, the earliest of which date back over four decades. The most recent and by far the most provocative and inspiring amongst 'em, 'Symbol Red (Merzwärts)'. baffles in music and sound whilst a jolly cacophony evolves. Effortlessly flirting with minimal and classical composition, Wüsthoff adds a whole range of wicked and witty sound effects.
It is overall rather a mixed bag. A couple of great tricks, however, lure you in to this absolute treat of a track, 'Symbol Red'. One of my best headphones moments of this year.
