Hatful of Rain combine powerful songwriting with great musical virtuosity.
The four piece band showcase their Celtic, English and American influences on this third album, 'Songs of the Lost and Found' which is released in July. The original songs featured focus very much on modern world issues with themes of migration, loss, identity, redemption and austerity. Musically the band blend their vocals plus guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and bass sounds seamlessly with input from an array of guest musicians.
The first track, 'Start Again',is very Appalachian in style - though Chloe Overton's attractive vocals make it feel a bit Nashville too. Then the third song, 'Devil's Dyke', is very much British folk - about World War 1 - while track ten, 'Ponderosa Pine' feels like gentle bluegrass.
The BBC's Bob Harris is a great fan of Hatful of Rain and has in the past featured them on his Radio 2 Saturday show. Their previous albums have been warmly received by the roots music world and the band has been nominated to perform at the Americana Music Awards in Nashville.
Hatful of Rain are touring in the UK this summer to support the release of Songs of the Lost and Found. They excel at live performance and often adopt the bluegrass style of harmonising, using one microphone for all four voices - which creates an authentic, more intimate sound.
