What a fine label Hubro is! Based in Oslo, they are committed to releasing jazz and improvisation sounds from the eclectic and progressive scene in Norway.
'Phosphoresence' sits firmly in the “improvise” corner with four tracks of shimmering intensity that will take you by surprise. You might ask the question “Is this music?” as the seemingly totally improvised collection of sounds and noises seem at first to have no structure at all.
Dans Les Arbres hold close to the sense of modernism of John Cage as the interplay between instruments such as prepared piano, percussion, clarinet and sampling seem to dance in the air with seemingly no destination in mind.
Perhaps to a new listener 'Phosphoresence' could leave you cold but the combination of technology intertwined with percussion and ambient noise make for an intriguing and satisfying journey. Often gentle and beautiful this album also has moments of nervous and unsettling energy that keep you listening.
Recorded at Isitart studio in rural Sweden the feeling of mystery and isolation is never far away reflecting stillness and space. The mix, however, is warm and natural bringing out the clarity and depth of the instrumentation.
If you are looking for catchy tunes this is not the album for you but if you are willing to take a left field turn this will prove a moving experience.
Made up of four tracks two short and two long, 'Phosphoresense' is thirty-four minutes of exploration on the boundaries between sound and music.
Track Listing:
01) Sciure
02) Fluorescent
03) Luminescent
04) Phosphorescent
