This is a curious offering from Kirt Debique, who is a singer-songwriter from the Pacific Northwest by way of Trinidad and Tobago. Kirt has been part of the Seattle music scene for the past few years, and 'Things Left Unsaid', which has been released on his own Brick Lane Records, is his debut solo album Once the frontman for the Mayors of Liberty, Debique has scored high with this. It does take a few listens to get to grips with his unusual vocals, but once it does take hold it won't let go.
The main ingredients are love, family and loss and its expertly portrayed by a man that has obviously gone through a few relationship heartaches himself. It has all beeen produced in-house at Brick Lane by Ben Verdoes and Ephriam Nagler. who have also helped with the instrumentation too.
Each track is as thought-provoking and listenable as the last, drawing sounds not too dissimilar to Depeche Mode during their 'Precious' era and combining Debique's synths with Verdoes and Arai's drums and electric bass. One of the highlights is the sparse and chilling 'Tell Me How You Know' which also sports n horrific alien-orientated video if you can hunt it down on YouTube. 'Promise' is a wonderful two-and-half minutes of echoing beats, which starts off with an industrial sound and Debique's celestial musings.
'Things Left Unsaid' is housed in a plush well-illustrated case with an excellent booklet with all the lyrics and great artwork including some superb photography by Megumi Shauna Arai. It is a compelling album that should not be overlooked. Give it a few tries and it will win you over.
If you're looking for comparisons to liken Debique's voice to, there are none. Debique's sound is on its haunting, sorrowful own. This is one of the year's most unusual and unique pieces of music.
