Outsider-folk three piece One Mile An Hour created their self titled debut album in their own studio on the south coast overlooking the sea. The result is a fine organic work of music evoking nature and peaceful spirits.
'One Mile An Hour' and its lead song 'Sunken Ships' starts with a folk acoustic guitar strum ,and a lovely heartfelt falsetto vocal by Jeff Kightly. "Come inside/You know what it’s like,” he beckons as an easy folk tinged melody builds in momentum until the song goes electric.
On 'Trouble’s Roots' we hear Americana influenced acoustic based music that breathes. With a rootsy earthbound vocal, Kightly sings “I took your troubles and cut through”, holding the promise of a life that gets better.
'In Return' features beautiful hushed tones and quiet vocals that impart wisdom: “Some’ll see stone where another knows gold.”
'Magpie Song' strikes a mournful tone. One Mile An Hour at once brings to mind folk and folk rock giants from Fairport Convention to The Band to the Grateful Dead.
'You are on the Beach' features some fine intricate guitar play and an earthly subtle vocal evoking sea and sand, earth and nature. The result is at once grand and yet intimate.
This is natural, down home, warm soothing music. “Love You More” is another rich folk song, speaking poignantly about love.
The ten minute closer 'Nine Eight: live” is an epic number, cinematic in its instrumental scope, featuring surging guitar and cascading drum beats. All in all, a fine promising debut for One Mile An Hour.
