Brakes: Hey Hey

Reviewed By: Jamie Rowland
Label: Fat Cat
Format: 7"

Brakes return with the first single from new album, 'Touchdown', which is released in April. ‘Hey Hey’ is unashamed, balls-out “rawk”, and what a stonker it is too. At only a little over 2 minutes long, it goes in, does the job, and gets out again in a satisfyingly to the point way. We don’t always need complication; sometimes it’s nice to just have riff, riff, verse, chorus, riff, verse, chorus, riff, end. Lovely!

The first B-side, ‘Consumer, Producer, A Chicken or An Egg’ is even more economical with its time, taking as long to listen to as it does to read what it’s called.

The second B-side is the Countryfied beauty of ‘Set a Course’. A shame that such a lovely song didn't make the cut for the album, but I suppose that can only say good things about the tracks that made it. And all the more reason to but the single, of course! So yes. Go do that.
