American singer-songwriter and television personality Kelly Clarkson has released her second seasonal and ninth studio album. Made in the aftermath of her divorce, ‘When Christmas Comes Around …’ features a classic holiday repertoire with twelve new recordings and three bonus tracks previously released between 2017 and 2020. There is a mix of covers and original songs written for the album, enhanced by collaborations with Chris Stapleton and Ariana Grande. Seasonal favourites like ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’, ’Santa Baby’, ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ and ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ are given a fresh, contemporary spin. Standout songs in this fifteen-track Christmas-themed collection include: the dramatic opener, country-pop ‘Merry Christmas Baby’ with its bittersweet lyrics: “You send gifts that someone else picks/You send cards with empty promises…”; the catchy ‘Christmas Isn’t Cancelled (Just You)’, the lead single from the album with its resilient lyrics: “And I bet you see me out wondering what’s wrong/Watching me have fun with you gone/But New Year isn’t canceled, Christmas isn’t canceled/Just you”; the emotive ‘Merry Christmas (To The One I Used To Know) with its sober accompaniment; the melodic ‘Glow’ featuring Chris Stapleton, with its impressive, mellifluous vocals; ‘Santa Can’t You Hear Me?’, an effervescent duet with Ariana Grande; a novel and emotional rendition of the George Michael hit ‘Last Christmas’ as a jazz ballad; the soaring, positive ‘Blessed’; and a new kind of Christmas classic, the energetic original composition and closer ‘Christmas Eve’. Heart-warming, nostalgic, an upbeat pop album with splashes of R&B, jazz and gospel, ‘When Christmas Comes Around...’ highlights Clarkson’s considerable vocal talent and songwriting ability.
