Hello and welcome to the June 2022 edition of the magazine. After a two-and-a-half year absence, we are putting on two Bands Nights later this year. The first of these will take place at our regular London venue of The Waters Rats on September 10th. It will be co- headlined by cinematic pop act Heist who after an absence of eighteen years are making their return to the London stage at our gig, and Idiot Son, who having played our Bands Nights five times before, have announced that this most likely to be their farewell show. Also on the bill are rising indie/alt. rock outfit The Volunteered and Bromide frontman Simon Bromide who will be showing off his new three-piece band. The second gig will take place at The Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh on October 8th and will feature an evening of solo performances. It will be headlined by Stuart Moxham, who was the guitarist and main songwriter in the influential post-punk Young Marble Giants. Since they broke up in the early 1980s, Stuart has carved out an impressive career for himself both with his next project The Gist which has had a revolving line-up and as a solo musician. Also on the bill are local musicians Jeremy Thoms (The Cathode Ray, New Leaf) and Roy Moller. We are certainly not saying never again, but these are unfortunately liable to be our last Bands Nights for a while. There is always a financial risk involved, and with the current rise in the cost of living this is compounded. We can’t afford them basically. Make the most of them and buy a ticket while you can. Tickets are available in advance at www.wegottickets.com and £8 for the London show and £10 for the Edinburgh show. As always, this magazine has been brought together through the talents and enthusiasm of many people. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks, without whom none of this would be possible. Since we published our last magazine. we have sadly learned of the deaths of ‘Rising Damp’ writer Eric Chappell, Saints frontman Chris Bailey, Cult Figures vocalist and guitarist Gary Jones and ex-Madam bassist Nick Bergin, all of whom were the subject of Pennyblackmusic interviews. As well as playing our Bands Nights with Madam, Nick also played at them with his other bands Altai Rockets and The Black Site. This edition is dedicated to their memories with gratitude and thanks. Please check out our regular Facebook and Twitter updates. Thank you as always for reading Pennyblackmusic, John Clarkson Magazine Editor www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk
