intro

Thought-provoking electronic space rock on fourth album from Newcastle/Manchester-based multi-instrumentalists Warm Digits

Memphis Industries bring us musical danceability in the form of Newcastle and Manchester-based Warm Digits, who consist of multi-instrumentalists Andrew Hodson and Steve Jefferis. The space electro- rockers’ previous album, 'Wireless World', (which featured guest vocals from Field Music and Sarah Cracknell amongst others), garnered plaudits from BBC 6Music including an Album of the Day slot, and boosted them on to the festival bills of Bluedot, Green Man and Festival No.6. Delving into the history of human interaction and its failings, The Shamen-esque Warm Digits explore how ideas and theories can live on as received wisdom long beyond their sell-by date. There are parts of this album that are sonically off the scale and then some which are less so, making them sounding like a cross between the Shamen and Sparks exploring Kraut-rock. This offering, their fourth LP, features vocal contributions from Maximo Park’s Paul Smith, the Lovely Eggs, the Orielles, Rozi Plain and the Delgados’ Emma Pollock. In this outing Warm Digits find themselves exploring gender, sanity and warped perspectives, the album also takes its title from the band’s finds. Defined as “a rapid shifting of ideas with only superficial associative connections between them”, the relevance of 'Flight of Ideas’ to our current information landscape hardly needs pointing out. The themes are born, as are many other albums of late, from the crazy everyday happenings in our weird and wonderful world at present and what the future may or may not hold for us as a species. The highlight for me comes in the form of 'The View from Nowhere' with vocals from Emma Pollack, which has some great Bowie style guitar in it. Their ability to collaborate and spread the music that way should do them justice, but this actual album should elevate them to a higher platform and gain
