intro
Music is just one element of the UK's most freewheeling and eclectic summer festival, Wilderness, says Nick Dent-Robinson. Nile Rodgers gets a rapturous reception while a celebrity cricket match prompts a record number of streakers.
The annual Wilderness Festival, staged this August in the glorious grounds of Cornbury Park, North West Oxfordshire must be one of the country's most freewheeling and eclectic events. There is plenty of music but that is just one aspect of this multi-faceted festival. There were also spoken word events, including “Letters Live” readings from Sir Ben Kingsley, Olivia Coleman, Alexander Armstrong and more. There were workshops on everything from woodland crafts to massage techniques. Plus there was an extensive range of weird and wacky sporting events from a massed game of musical chairs to a comedy cricket match - which attracted a world record number of streakers.... dozens, including a daring 82 year-old! Hosted by Lady Tanya Rotherwick, the event was as popular as ever with literally scores of celebrities - from fashion supermodels to a former prime minister - in the audience. The music was great, too - and headliner Nile Rodgers, the funk and disco legend, received a rapturous reception.
