intro
A long hiatus is no bar to a rowdy return with first album in seventeen years for Glaswegian rockers Baby Chaos
Years after their heyday, Glasgow-based rock band Baby Chaos still elicit fierce loyalty. Their new album gives a clear reason for that longstanding love. Actually it gives 11 clear reasons - each a perfectly packaged piece of heavy riffing rock. Listening to 'Skulls, Skulls, Skulls, Show Me the Glory' in its entirety feels like flipping between classic rock stations. Every song brings to mind a different piece of rock history, from stadium to metal to alternative. There is also a creeping suspicion that Baby Chaos are in on the joke. From the overwrought album title to songs such as 'We Were Youth', via lyrics such as “all the boys and all the girls? In all the bars around the world”, this is played so straight it must be knowing. Although it pieces together different styles, there is a cohesion to what the band are doing. The love songs come on harder than expected, the anger is tempered with subtlety, and the whole package feels more like a deftly curated ‘greatest hits’ from a band that has somehow flown under the radar for seventeen years, rather than having been basically retired. 'Skulls…' comes nearly two decades after the last album from Baby Chaos but the band do not appear rusty from the hiatus. This album sets a high bar for every other piece of rock that comes after it this year. What took you so long, guys?
