Allo Darlin' - We Come From the Same Place
Label: Fortuna POP!
Format: CD

intro

Exuberant and infectious third album from much acclaimed indie pop band, Allo Darlin'

We’ve got a lot to thank the Go-Betweens for. Not just a back catalogue of some of the greatest music produced over their near thirty year career, but the fact that their trailblazing move from Australia to London back in the 1980s inspired a fresh-faced Elizabeth Morris to follow suit some twenty odd years later by leaving Queensland for England’s capital city to seek her musical destiny. Without such wanderlust and driven determination the truly wonderful Allo Darlin’ would never have formed, and I would not be sitting here listening to their incredible third LP, ‘We Come From the Same Place’. From Elizabeth’s point of view she would not have met and married her Swedish husband and be living in Italy, so a massive win/win situation! Following on the heels of 2010’s self-titled debut and 2012’s excellent follow-up, ‘Europe’, ‘We Come From the Same Place’ was conceived as Elizabeth’s relationship was blossoming and as such it documents a period of change in her life in the shape of beautifully crafted indie-pop gems. On the back of the togetherness gained by the Anglo-Australian 4 piece’s constant touring over the last few years the album also shows a positive progression from previous releases, without losing any of the trademark touches that make Allo Darlin’ so special. Highlights are plentiful across the 11 tracks with one of the English members of the group, ace guitarist Paul Rains (the other being drummer Michael Collins) being let loose on duet duties for lead single 'Bright Eyes', while the title track and 'History Lessons' also stand out as future Allo Darlin’ classics. Elsewhere, 'Angela' with the clever and oh so true line "and the hardest thing we ever have to learn is when those we love don’t love us in return" shows the slower side of the band’s normal upbeat pop and showcases Elizabeth’s fine storytelling lyrics. In truth it is hard to pick out any of the tracks for special praise as the quality is so consistently high…. 'Heartbeat', 'Half Heart Necklace', 'Crickets in the Rain'….. all belters…. Sod it, just buy the album you won’t be disappointed.
