intro

Tony Gaughan watches rock and rock band the Jim Jones Revue blast their way through a short, but brilliant set at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow

It is worth turning up early to check out the garage psychobilly-esque Amazing Snakeheads, who are opening tonight in their home town. The trio are recent signees to the influential Domino record label, and they mean business as they stroll onto the stage bathed in simple white lights with their gold-lamé shirts. They open with recent single ‘Testifying Time’ with a menacing aggression which continues throughout theit set. With the arrival on stage of Laura St Jude, an element of calm is, however, restored for the stunning ‘Bull Fighter', which shows a completely different side to the band. The London-based the Jim Jones Revue are no strangers to Glasgow having played it three times it less than two years, and here to showcase their new single ‘Collision Boogie’ and the best of their four long players. Opening with ‘Mind Field’, the five-piece featuring Rupert Orton (brother of Beth) immediately engage the busy venue with their garage blues-infused old fashioned rock and roll. With much strutting and lashings of boogie-woogie piano, the band blaze through a short set including the brilliant ‘Seven Times around the Sun’, Chain Gang’ and end the first part of the set with ‘In and Out of Harm's Way’ from recent album ‘The Savage Heart’. The band briefly leave the stage to a somewhat puzzled crowd reaction from the crowd, but soon return asking for requests and test the audience with obscure B-sides and songs rarely aired. Elvis hit ‘Big Hunk of Love’, and the blistering ‘Where Da Money Go ‘and ‘Another Daze’ all leave the audience yelling for more.
