intro
Exceptional second EP from Brighton-based cellist and singer-songwriter, Abi Wade
I love the cello. Its melancholic sadness appeals to the darker more private side of me. And the arrival of this on my doorstep was a joy. Abi Wade is a cello player from Brighton and her music is as she puts it is “a musical collaboration between limbs, strings and vocal chords.” It starts with a bumping heart beat and swiftly moves in to some lovely cello melancholy. Abi's haunting voice is not too dissimilar to Florence but a little softer and more palatable, dare I say? It has a melody and bass line that hooks you in from the start, bringing its subject of domestic violence grippingly to the fore and to an abrupt end that will leave you wanting more. It is quite evident that the cello is the backbone to Abi’s music with its plucking, bowing and banging, but a slow progression of electronica that has started to also infiltrate her sound. This single is very different from almost anything else out there. Use of brushes, sticks and boxes also bring in a little something extra. Oh, and the cello...
