intro
Classy and accessible radio-friendly pop on debut album from Sheffield sextet, Dead Like Harry
The opening track of this debut album 'Street' literally walks into your ears which is a good opening gambit from what proves to be a very solid album. All but two of the six members of Sheffield sextet Dead Like Harry are listed as providing vocals and the variety lends a very pleasing depth and assurance to the tracks. Samuel J. Taylor and Alice Faraday's male and female vocal style and the blues pop piano are reminiscent of Deacon Blue. 'I Couldn't Love You Anymore' is the most radio friendly pop song I have heard for quite some time. It's bouncy, has a terrific hook and one of those titles local radio DJs just love to subvert into a cheesy into. 'Driving to Nowhere' is one of the more downbeat numbers, beautifully spare and rich with acoustic guitars it allows you to shift down a gear before stepping on the gas again in 'Road Trip'. Faraday's Stevie Nicks-esque vocals are utter power ballad. This album has a timeless feel, it could have just as easily been released twenty years ago (band in nappies not withstanding). Occasionally it feels a little lacking in texture but such are the risks when you have such a recognisable modus operandi. It is classy, well executed and produced, accessible but perhaps a little too mainstream for some.
