The Presidents of the United States of America recently returned to touring after an absence of several years. The band, whose music combines ridiculous lyrics with a no nonsense alt.rock sound, were formed in the early 1990's in Seattle. An early single 'Kitty' told of the mood swings of singer Chris Ballew's cat, while another single 'Peaches' told of the group's obsession with picking fruit. Their debut album 'Presidents of the United States of America' was released on major label Columbia in 1995 and went double platinum. A second album 'II' followed in 1996 and did equally well. The three piece group, worn out after three years of extensive touring, however, decided to split up at the height of their fame in December 1997. The Presidents of the United States of America finally got back together in 2004, at which time they released their third album 'Love Everybody' on their own PUSA label. The band, having bought back the right to 'The Presidents of the United States of America', re-released it on PUSA earlier this year. Ballew plays a two string bass which the group has named a bassiter, while guitarist Dave Dederer plays a three string instrument called a guitbass. The band's s third member is drummer Jason Finn. The Presidents of the United States of America recently played their first dates in Britain in almost a decade. These photographs were taken at a show at the Astoria in London on May 21st by Anna Gudaniec exclusively for Pennyblackmusic
