Protest the Hero come from Whitby in Ontario, and were the winners of the Best Indie Metal Band award at the Canadian 2004 Indie Music Awards. The group, which consists of Rody Walker (lead vocals), Tim Millar (guitar, vocals), Luke Hoskin (lead guitars, vocals, piano), Moe Carlson (drums) and Arif Mirabolbaghi (bass guitar, vocals), wzx formed by its members when they were 14 year old school friends. Protest the Hero spent over 5 years forfeiting weeks and summer vacations so that they could develop their craft and go out on the road. They have played gigs with such acts as Limp Bizkit, Korn, Death by Stereo, Alexisonfire and Sum 41 and have also appeared on the Canadian dates of the Vans Warped Tour. The debut album 'Kezia' which the band describe as a "situationist requiem" came out in late May and tells of the doomed execution of its title character. It is told from the perspective of three characters, the Prison Priest, the Prison Guard/Gunman and Kezia herself. Protest the Hero wrote music for it that they could initially not play, and then spent over two years forcing themselves to learn how to do so. The group, whose music merges together thrash, melody, anger, politics and energy, have an intense live following at home and recently toured Britain to promote the album. These photographs were taken by Anna Gudaniec exclusively for Pennyblackmusic at a show at the London Mean Fiddler in May.
