Oddball lo-fi Canadian electro rock on third album from Dan Snaith. who has recently been forced to change his alias from Manitoba to Caribou
After a run in with Handsome Dick Manitoba, the delicately featured Dan Snaith was forced to change the name of his lo-fi oddity project Manitoba to Caribou, another reassuringly Canadian moniker. Snaith’s third studio album carries on from where he left off, evoking the laptop beats of 'Start Breaking My Heart' and combining them with the wonderfully organic electro sounds of his 2003 masterpiece 'Up In Flames'. 'The Milk of Human Kindness' encompasses a much greater diversity than previously seen on Caribou/Manitoba records, lurching from the muffled Soul sounds of ‘Subotnick’ to the lilting, breezy summer urgency of ‘A Final Warning.’ On ‘Lord Leopard’ Snaith uses Hip Hop samples providing a rustic answer to the urban stylings of DJ Shadow. The album veers away from the organised chaos that peppered 'Up In Flames' in favour of more quiet, melodic excursions prefixed with anarchic blasts of white noise, creating an often bewildering soundscape. Caribou is a freak of nature, welding powerful drums to delicate Matmos-esque earthy samples that are powered by Snaith’s eerie vocals. 'The Milk of Human Kindness' is yet another candidate for album of the year.
