intro

Instantly classic and timeless synth pop on 11th studio album from the long-serving Erasure

'Nightbird' is Erasure's 11th studio album. After listening to Mute releases by Suicide, whom play similiar style instrumentals this came to me as something of a relief. Suicide may have invented the style later adopted by Erasure, but Erasure have had the hits, They are not just musically better but vocally more multi flavoured too. 'Nightbird' may also prove to be a Greatest Hits album or hit singles collection, as every single track here is commercial enough to be a hit single. Nowadays it is almost impossible to still be commercial and to have a hit after more than twenty years of being in the business, but Erasure are the one of the few acts who are able to do so. The album kicks off with 'No Doubt', a refreshing and charming pop number with crystal clear keyboards and a beautiful golden vocal from Andy Bell, which is well delivered and very well mannered. 'Here I Go Impossible Again' sounds very 80's , and is proud of it,too. It is easy single material. 'Let's Take One More Rocket to the Moon' could easily be a modern nursery rhyme with Andy wavering his magical pop wand, all over it, like fairy pixie dust. The album's first single, 'Breathe' follows, which is reviewed elsewhere. 'I'll BeThere' is bubbling and sparkling, the sort of song that reminds you of summer sunshine, which we all need at this doomy time of year. 'Because Our Love is Real' is a reflective tale of love, sang softly and wrapped up in cotton wool. "Don't Say You Love Me' is good solid pop that is quite dancey in a club manner. The last 4 tracks, 'All This Time Still Falling Out of Love', 'I Broke It All in Two', 'Sweet Surrender', and I Bet You're Mad at Me' are all just perfect syn pop at its best,. All of these are worthy of being classic singles from a band that remain where they deserve to be at the top. Even if you don't like their brand of pop, Erasure have worked hard at their craft, and the results on this are just swell.
