intro
Evocative and beautiful new album from long lost singer-songwriter and folk artist Nick Garrie
Nick Garrie has been described as "the Yorkshire Troubadour", and is probably most recognised for his 1969 debut 'The Nightmare of JB Stanislas' and was once touted in the same breath as Bob Dylan for his musical potential. Now at the tender age of 68, he is thankfully still making music, and his latest offering of 'The Moon And The Village' adds to his renaissance. With the aid of Gary Olson, Garrie has turned out a beautifully produced record, warm but with a crisp clarity. Such production values are evident on 'Music from a Broken Violin', and the exquisite 'Early Morning in the Garden', with Garrie’s melancholic vocal or remembrance, superbly counterpointed by violin. its evocative of Leonard Cohen. Within these tracks he displays a sagely grasp of the apt lyric, which is tempered to suit the subject matter. For instance, 'Bacardi Summer' is a humorous observation on a local character, which reminds us of Randy Newman musings. 'Boy Soldier' is social and historical commentary with a lyrical laser precision: “You won’t be coming back no more”. It’s not doleful, but jaunty, and gets across the message. 'Ma Petite Catherine' also provides humour, especially when Nick breaks character. The album concludes with 'Nick’s Minuet', the maestro again showing us his musical dexterity and imagination. 'The Moon And The Village' has come as a splendid surprise, as though it could be easily dismissed as just another “folk record”, especially if you haven’t listened to it. You would, however, be missing out on a very beautiful record. Here we have a true artist, with a masterful grasp of musical composition and lyricism, and we should all rejoice that he is still willing to put his shoulder to his personal musical plow to keep delivering such accomplished compositions for us all to enjoy
