intro
Thoughtful and provocative debut album from indie-folk/Americana outfit Futur Primitif, the new band of ex-Low Anthem guitarist Daniel Lefkowitz
The new Futur Primitif album 'Machineteeth' poignantly captures a sometimes bleak workingman’s world, with gritty vocals and fine moody instrumentation- a topical album that speaks to issues of the day. All songs on 'Machineteeth' are written by singer, guitarist and former Low Anthem member Daniel Lefkowitz. He is joined in Futur Primitif by Jared Elmore on synths, electronics and drum machine. The opener 'Nuclear Shockwave' possesses an earthy resonant vocal with lyrical imagery that gives chills, envisioning a nuclear holocaust. At once deeply troubling and musically beautiful, a sound simultaneously rich and spare washes over the listener, ultimately ending in a nuclear explosion. The natural vocals on 'Digital Space' buzz with sounds at once indie-folk and Americana. Lyrically reflective, the song speaks forthrightly about alienation: “I feel my soul a drifting throguh the hollow digital space.” The title track is Springsteenesque in its description of the plight of the working man, punching the clock in a factory world. The narrator’s is a human voice in an inhuman situation: “I am the teeth of the machine in the bright light of the factory/And why did you tell me I could be anything that I wanted to be?” 'Current Fiction' ranges from thoughts on the poet Allen Ginsberg to trying to hold your head high in the face of disease - speaking of despair, yet with spirit. The number 'Silver Bullet' is moody, spacey and Velvet Underground reminiscent, with lyrical imagery of paved streets and hipster boutiques, then again reflecting on toiling for the man in the harsh working world. A sea of trees, flat top mountains, the windy beach - on the closer 'Time' Lefkowitz finely strings together poetic imagery that speaks to the soul from the vantage point of an airplane overhead. This is an easy, lovely closing tune to an album that is thoughtful and provocative while musically evocative as well.
