intro
Excellent new single from London-based indie group Emmy the Great, the bubbly, marching tempo of which contrasts well with its dark theme
Using the thumping, tortured blueprint of the chanteuse, 'We Almost Had a Baby' is sophisticated in both musical form and theme. Not many singles eschew a recognisable chorus, building up a complex pattern of melody and refrain. Even fewer see a female singer muse on the power she could have had over her lover if she had fallen pregnant. “I would have like to have something above you,” Emma Lee Moss sings to a man who obviously done her wrong. And just how wrong is not clear, “You didn’t stop, when I told you to stop,” implies something more sinister, at least cruel misogyny. Taken from Emmy the Great’s forthcoming album, 'First Love, We Almost Had a Baby' is dark and disturbing in contrast to its bubbly, marching tempo. The album is apparently a thematic whole about an abusive relationship. The warm beauty and innocence of Emmy’s delivery belie a dark theme and the final pay off is startling.
