intro
Catchy, but over familiar-sounding indie guitar rock from up and coming young Birmingham band the Maccabees
This is a very hard single to review. There is definitely some excitement surrounding this up-and-coming young Birmingham band. It is really hard to judge 'About Your Dress' objectively on its own merits and, for the song alone, rather than comparing it to countless other songs and bands that are around at the moment. There is nothing wrong with 'About Your Dress'. It is a catchy little song that bounces along nicely and you remember what it sounds like after you’ve heard it. It is not un-memorable. Every other bastard with tight jeans and a floppy fringe is, however, doing this and it’s all getting somewhat tedious by now. This is not necessarily a stab at the Maccabees. They have a good sound and s strong energy, but all their qualities can be found in countless other bands at the moment. ‘About Your Dress’ could have easily been made by Razorlight, the Libertines, Babyshambles, Futureheads or the View. It’s this lack of identity that is the downfall of the Maccabees. I can’t tell them apart from the next indie guitar band, which is a shame, but is inevitable in music sometimes. No doubt someone will be saying something similar in a year or so about a band who are playing rave music on guitars while everyone waves glow sticks like it’s 1992 again, but that is just the way it works sometimes.
