intro
Excellent gypsy-influenced folk rock from New Mexico-based duo A Hack and A Hacksaw, which was partly recorded in a tiny rural village near the Ukraine/Romanian border
Recorded partly in the front room of a family from a tiny rural community near the Ukraine/Romanian border, 'The Way The Wind Blows' is full of gypsy influence, especially on songs like ‘Fernando’s Giampari’ and ‘Oporto’, as well as taking in influences from Turkey (‘God Bless The Ottoman Empire’) and American folk on tracks like opener ‘In the River’. The central duo and the main songwriting partnership of A Hawk And A Hacksaw is Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost, who mix beautiful violin and accordion with the haunting Romany brass and the trumpet of Zach Condon, who they roped in from their hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. All the songs on this record are brilliantly orchestrated, and the Romany musicians who helped out create much more atmosphere than might otherwise have been achieved. A fantastic record, 'The Way the Wind Blows' brings World Music to an accessible level, and that can only be a good thing.
