intro
Second Rolling Stones influenced solo album from former Royal Trux star, which, while owing "a debt to mid seventies rock" throws "in a bit of grunge, echo and chacha" along the way.
Thanks a lot. Neil Hagerty couldn't have opened his new solo album in a more cynical way. His band Royal Trux never made too much impact on the post Rolling Stones generation, but it was them he was after! 'Plays That Good Old Rock'n Roll' aptly describes the album. It consists of concise songs that tell personal stories, and is played by a better band than Royal Trux ever was. Or is that too unfair? It's rowdy, plaintive for some parts, yet, this slightly troubled sounding man got lost in tour de forces that took Royal Trux off the road. Now he's got Washington's finest Make Up backing him under the guise of Weird War and this joint effort is such a delight. Make Up's 'Save Yourself!' still rates amongst the most neglected classics of our day. 'Plays That Good Old Rock'n Roll' owes a debt to mid seventies rock but thowing in a bit of grunge, echo and chacha, it's not just memorabilia. On this second Neil Michael Hagerty - nice middle name Neil! - it's dark brooding leather jacket stuff and certain to cheer up while you open up another beer.

Two years ago Andrew Carver watched Neil Hagerty put on a stunning set at Ottawa's Dominion Tavern in one of Royal Trux's final perfomances, but finds that, now he has turned solo, he has lost none of his impact in a return engagement |
