The first full length outing from Newcastle’s Pale Man Made doesn’t see them resting on their laurels after their well-received 'Inchberry' EP. Leaving behind the desire to fall into motorik locked grooves of noise, the album is far more introspective with delicate arrangements of intertwined guitar and piano. The first track 'Clunk Click' is a statement of intent with layered subtle melodies being driven by the sporadic urgent drums, and Christianne’s vocals lamenting over the building refrain. Taking over vocal duties on "Straight Lines" Leon’s hushed voice perfectly delivers a feeling of hazy isolation. At times reminiscent of the early Delgados, they also share a common thread with the likes of Hood and more melodic post rock. The thoughtful, almost orchestrated arrangements are never overplayed or forced. Even in more rock-out’ tracks such as ‘Star Pig’ the repeated lyric "were just distracting your attention, from things you believe in" pulls you in, calmly engaging you. Allegiance sees a return to quiet melancholic themes with Christianne singing what’s almost a lullaby. While not coming straight ahead as an indie rock onslaught "The Future Shape Of…" is delivered with a knowing self-assurance that can’t fail to charm. A definite victory through stealth.
