Magazine Review Scottish country pop music (the Delgados etc) knows many devotees, but oddly enough Lucky Luke have never met as much worship. Lucky Luke broke up and this second album was only first made available in 2011 as an LP in Brooklyn, NYC and now on a CD in the UK, five years after its recording.
Firmly rooted in traditional Scottish folk music, the band's name and the grim cover though do absolutely no justice to their brightly jangling songs, which are of sometimes epic momentum. Let alone the exquisite vocals which remind of many great names of yesteryear and today. Think Steeleye Span and Nancy Elizabeth. And could someone with Auntie Beeb please put 'Jackie' on the C-Playlist?
'Travelling for a Living' is the kind of album that ought to be wrapped in a transparent plastic seal with an eye-catching sticker glued over the front cover. The dark imagery is misleading. 'Bratislavan Nights' sounds semi-cheerful and has a subtle touch of violin. This is followed by the grand 'The Black Tree' and 'Summer Walker'.
The album succeeds in sucking you in like a salty breeze. The harmonic vocals of female duo singers Lucy Sweet and Morag Wilson sound particularly intriguing on 'Summer Interlude' which is about seven weeks of good in Tuscany and France, drinking from the fairy cup with sweet Mary. The heart-broken lyrics of 'In The Rain' for example go very well with the sober orchestrations. I'm pretty certain a dearly missed Radio1 evening-DJ would have treasured 'Travelling for a Living'
