Thomas Truax
Sonic Dreamer
CD on SL Records
Cat No: PT1011 , Stk Ref 78063

Released on: 25 June 2010

Magazine Review
Following on from his last album which was devoted to the music used in the films of David Lynch, Thomas Truax frees himself from form. Truax sets his music and compositions to follow the path of his story telling about the 'Sonic Dreamer'. A down-to-earth lyricist, or joker, Truax also uses basic acoustic equipment, but his post-production work relies on tricks from the digital trade. Unmistakenly the work of a one-man band but ever so admirable.

'Sonic Dreamer' is a bit of a ridicule. A wide range of styles got incorporated; cabaret, jumpy new wave and rather dry funk. Side two of the LP suddenly brings on stuff that you can somehow dance, or stumble, to. Wacky lo-fi pub lounge with just a little touch of lovely and freshly picked avant garde. The title track sounds almost as if it is a homage to David Lynch; very much like 'Dune'.

I think every track is a standout. Sonic Dreamer is the most creative and genuinely touching album I've come across yet this year. Truax is deservedly widely praised but like all the great innovators his music is not always easy or to everyone's taste. I would suggest Darren who posted the previous review, or anyone for that matter, should get with the times and listen to sample tracks on line before purchasing any album. This is a brilliant collection of songs.

This album is a total and utter disappointment, not one stand-out track or notable tune - full of the usual 'novelties', sampling and such most employed in this type of recording. A get your money back sticker may have been a decent idea. I certainly won't be watching out for any future releases. V disappointing :(
