Without A Plan

Produced by the man-of-the-moment Dave Fridmann, Without A Plan is as one might expect it to be - beautifully realized psychedelic pop in the vein of recent recordings from Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips. But whereas those two bands' melodies tend at times to drift off into the ether, Bodega - or more accurately singer, instrumentalist and songwriter Andrew Rodriguez - keeps the songs, nicely earthbound. With a high, clear voice reminiscent of a younger Neil Young, Rodriguez affectingly puts across his often-plaintive tunes, which involve such topics as love, loss and Vespas. But he knows how to kick it a la Crazy Horse, as he does on the brief "Don't Have A Clue." The album is filled with sudden delights and fancies, from the symphonic title track to the melancholic "Up In Smoke, Out In Tears," to the gentle "Sometimes." A record this spellbinding, this meticulous, it's hard to believe it's without a plan." Eliot Wilder - Amplifier.

Weird and catchy pop tunes, impeccably produced....Yeah!
This record by Canadian outfit Bodega really deserves more attention....a friend from Canada turned me onto it, so I'm writing this hoping someone else will get a chance. Without A Plan is so good on so many levels.....Recording guru David Fridmann of Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips fame recorded, mixed and co-produced it and it's kind of on the same ground as those bands but poppier.... there are all sorts of moods and changes....and plenty of ear-candy! This is really an impeccably produced record, with fleshed out arrangements and interesting instrumentation. Every song is cool and they're all different. Singer/songwriter Andrew Rodriguez has a knack for penning some very weird but extremely catchy tunes...slightly psychedelic...you can hear the Beatles influence, and at times Neil Young's....but that's a good thing in my book and it's quite an original record overall. Great singing and guitar playing. Rodriguez and Fridmann make a great team. Now go get it!!
