Why 69 love songs. The story has it that stephen merritt came up with the idea for 69 love songs while sitting in an elegant midtown manhattan gay piano bar. He originally planned for it to be a live musical revue, performed with a rotaitng cast of singers in the plush hotel bars and cabarets of new yourk city. Initially it was to 100 love songs, but at 2 minutes per song, thats over 3 hours. The box set will be very limited, and comes with a 76 page booklet including an interview with stephen merritt explaining the motivation behind every song. Guest vocals on 24 of the tracks are by shirley simms, claudiagonson, dudley klute and ld beghtol.
