intro
Flawed, but potentially promising indie rock on debut single from young Stockton-based group, Femme Fatale
I was intrigued to hear what Femme-Fatale sounded like, hailing as they do from my hometown of Stockton (and Leeds). Given the assertively-edged theme to their name, I expected a defiant tone to their music, and almost expected the post-industrial heritage of their home to translate into their music. I was wrong. Femme Fatale are in fact an indie four-piece, sounding more like a mellow version of Garbage without the bite... The short (2m 45s) CD Single for 'The Woah Song' is...well...very short. With only a single track found on the CDS, it is uncommonly short, which was not a promising start. Furthermore, 'The Woah Song' involved "Woah" being sung by both vocalists,Emma Taylor and Simone Silvistris, repeatedly. While this sounds as if I abhorred 'The Woah Song', this is not the case. Despite the irritating chorus, the actual lyrics were very good ("I can't take all this tension / Take me to another dimension"). Likewise, while the dual vocalists were a hindrance, instrumentally they were very good, with Taylor's guitar deserving special mention. Overall, I would describe this as a flawed effort, but one worthy of recognition. The qualities that make this track stand out are not dragged down by the flaws that would handicap other similar songs.
